Direct2Drive pricematch actually utterly useless
A couple of days ago I reported that Direct2Drive appeared to be offering a pricematch against Steam and GamersGate. Turns out they are, but only on items that are priced at RRP, not anything that is discounted. This means that the Steam and GamersGate Thanksgiving and Christmas sales do not count.
It is true that their Terms & Conditions do point this out, although they were not live when this offer started. Clearly this is a price match policy in name only, they have got no interest in actually offering their customers better value on these games than GamersGate or Steam.
I am deeply sorry to anyone who, as a result of me telling them about this offer, ended up paying more than they needed to for a game.

I for one am shocked, SHOCKED, that a company owned by Rupert Murdoch is not interested in giving its customers value for money.
“…than GamersGate or Direct2Drive”
No interest in offering better value than themselves? I suppose that’s true.
Uh..I meant Steam. Fixed, cheers.
The real head scratcher here is why you’d buy it from D2D if it was the same price on Steam. Worse customer support and install limits(CoD4 etc) are just two reasons why D2D sucks compared to Steam.
Some people are very firm about Steam being akin to DRM and so if D2D offers it for the same price, they’ll go there instead. Doesn’t bother me personally, but there you go.
Not sure what you been smokin’ but you’re wrong twice. They had their terms up when the offer started AND they don’t have anything about only RRP. They just say they won’t match coupons and all.
I got over $20 store credit for a game that was on sale on one of the sites in their terms for $7.50 when Direct2Drive had it for $29.95. Not sure what you’re on about here but hopefully people will think for themselves and check it out.
I see you’re quoting dollars in prices, perhaps the T&Cs were up on the USA site but they were not up on the UK site when the promotion launched. It was a dead link.
They refused to pricematch someone’s purchase of The Ball to the GamersGate price because it was on sale.
I posit that it is you who is smokin’ something, and that it is you who are wrong twice.
refusing to pricematch because something is on sale is very, very different to refusing to pricematch because something isn’t RRP. One is common enough that, frankly, it should be assumed for any pricematch promise. The other would be totally unheard of, as well as totally useless.
Which is it?
I think you’ve collectively saved us all enough money to obsolve yourself Lewie, anyway you report what’s there, it’s up to us to check it out.
Totalgamer – smokin comment is uncalled for.
