Just bought it, got a key, but it isn’t in the steam key format. Now I gotta figure out what to do with that key.

Nope, just the cd key. Also, you can’t register keys on uPlay. You first have to download the game, and then the installer activates uPlay and registers it. But you can’t register them like steam keys.
