That didn’t work for me, automatically changed it back to .co.uk. I am in the UK, so it might be that.
Are there additional charges for buying things in foreign currencies, in general?

Hm strange, I can buy from both the UK and COM site.
Anyways it’s 1.7€ for non-UK people.
