Savy Market Share: Retailers 2011

Since I’m always fascinated by the data generated by SavyGamer users, today I’ve had a poke through my records for the split of purchases for different retailers, and compiled a chart of where everyone spent the most on SavyGamer deals. A few qualifiers though: The data only includes places that do affiliate links, so there are some big omissions (Steam for one), also some of these retailers only serve the UK, whereas others will deliver to a range of international markets too. I’ve ranked the retailers in order, and listed what percentage of the total spend of SavyGamer users they had in 2012.

1. Tesco – 23.6%
2. Amazon – 22.64%
3. GAME – 13.09%
4. ASDA – 7.62%
5. play.com – 7.3%
6. The Hut – 5.55%
7. Zavvi – 5.03%
8. Gamestation – 4.4%
9. Gameplay – 3.2%
10. HMV – 2.9%
11. ShopTo.Net – 1.44%
12. GamersGate – 0.7%
13. The Game Collection – 0.68%
14. Coolshop – 0.65%
15. Best Buy UK – 0.4%
16. Origin/EA Store – 0.21%
17. Direct2Drive – 0.19%
18. Choices UK – 0.14%
19. Bee.com – 0.13%
20. PC World – 0.077%
21. Dixons – 0.022%
22. Woolworths – 0.017%
23. Sendit – 0.0086%
24. Currys – 0.0048%

I hope you find that somewhat interesting, I thought it was worth sharing. Any interesting trends you noticed? Surprised to see Tesco at number 1?

Based on traffic to posts about games on Steam, I am fairly confident that they would be high up on this list, if not at or near the top. It’s worth noting that GAME group would be at 20.69% and The Hut Group at 11% when you combine their constituent parts.

I’ll do this next year too, I reckon.

In europe I think we prefer digital downloads, play and zavvi (for their low shipping costs). Does Tesco even ship abroad for a reasonable price?

PS: Lewie, first off, still doing an awesome job, thanks so much for that. I was just wondering if you could put “used” in the title when the deal is about a used game. I personally have less interest in those(I like supporting the creators by buying new), but right now there is no way to filter them from Twitter, so I am occasionally disappointed when my browser takes me to savy. Thanks in advance, even if you don’t do it 🙂

Something along those lines it in the plans for the next version of SavyGamer. No idea when that’ll be though.

I would have expected Tesco to be near the top, bit surprised it’s number one though.

Hmmm, surprised to see Tesco Ent. at #1 since they don’t ship abroad, imho that’s good indicator of how many Savygamer visitors are from the Uk.

Amazon Uk would be my #1 if i didn’t need to order £25 or more to get free shipping. Still, Amazon price matches most offers from others retailers, and most of those other (except The Hut group ones) charge at least £2 for shipping abroad, so…. AND the Hut Group shops are extremely flimsy regarding delivery times, sooooo…..

No perfect retailer for me, but Amazon has well deserved good reputation IMHO.

Steam is usually open in the background for me so if I see a deal marked Steam I tend to flick across to that instead.

I found Savygamer in October and have been visiting regularly since. I found this site through google as I tried to find a site where they would show good prices for games I wanted to buy. Thanks to you I was able to buy Rage for £13, Portal 2 for £14, Shadow of the Damned for £10, Halo CEA for £23 and one bundle from IndieRoyale. I generally use Amazon for my shopping as I find them to be reliable and have a vast collection of games. Since October, I bought way over 30 games like Vanquish for £7, Sonic Generations for £12, Dead Space 2 for £10, Bulletstorm for £8, Bodycount for £5, BRINK for £8, etc. However, as a university student, I only play these games during my holidays and since I don’t take my 360 to uni and leave it at home………..I’ve got limited time with them. I still haven’t put most of the games into my 360 yet. Thank you for your hard work and please keep it up (no need telling you that though).

Oh, since finding Savygamer, I’ve spread the word about it to my gaming society at University, I know they use it a lot now. If, I want to find the cheapest price for a game that isn’t mentioned at Savygamer, I do search in Amazon and then check gamestrackers, which is good but I believe it is a little dated at times and sometimes doesn’t actually put the real cheapest price but I guess that’s because they haven’t updated it yet.

I am quite surprised to see Tesco anywhere near the top, its certainly not the first place I would look for buying games.

Also since when did Best Buy start selling in the UK?

Tesco did a lot of early discounts on big games. They were big sellers for the likes of DXHR, Skyrim, Saints Row 3, Arkham City and more.

Best Buy opened in 2011, and are in the process of shutting down atm.
