The Independent Games Festival nominees are up again, that means it’s time for me to compile a list of all of the featured games that are currently playable by mere mortals like you and me. This is a list of all of the games taking part in the IGF that are publicly available either commercially, freeware, web, beta, or just as a demo. This is part 1, and I’ll be publishing the rest over the coming weeks. I’ve looked at every entry, but not all have any form of publicly available playable build. If I’ve missed any, or got any details incorrect, please let me know.

8-Bit Commando
8-Bit Commando is a run and gun platformer with fast-paced action, a rocking soundtrack and explosions. The graphics will take you back to the classic age of gaming and the gameplay is bound to challenge even the most seasoned vets.

Achron
Achron is the first “meta-time strategy” game. It is a real-time strategy game where all players can simultaneously travel through time, change the past, preview the future, and send their forces through time to when they are needed. Did you make a mistake or start a battle you shouldn’t have? You can go back in time and change history, but so can your opponents. You can rush your opponent with carriers from the future, but you need to watch out that your opponent doesn’t destroy your factories and prevent your carriers from ever having been created in the first place! However,changing the past requires chronoenergy, and the further back in time you go, the more it costs to change the past.

Afterland
Afterland is a side-scrolling 2D platformer that immerses the player in a world out of time. You play as a reclusive forest-dweller with a penchant for collecting. One day, in his wanderings, he discovers an ancient parchment that he can barely decipher, a remnant of the past. Inspired by his discovery, he seeks to fill his house with the fascinating artifacts that have captured his imagination. Can you help him to find fulfillment and inner peace?

Air Pressure
Air Pressure is an unromantic visual novel about a relationship heading towards its end.

Alien Space
Alien Space is a dual-stick space shooter for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You progress through 30 levels (or play in Survival mode) piloting your ship through enemy space, destroying anything that gets in your way. Your ship is equipped with one light and one heavy weapon which you can change before each level. You can also upgrade your weapons and ship systems as you level up. As you play you’ll face a variety of enemies which use the same weapons you do, and then some.

Alpha Hack
AlphaHack is a casual break-at-the-office game where you run through a small dungeon collecting loot and leveling your character while trying to get a higher score then your previous best effort.

Aphelion

Astroslugs
Astroslugs is a colorful and soothing puzzle game that is extremely easy to pick up. It features interesting puzzles which require you to fit a number of different shapes upon a board. Fill all available spaces with all the available shapes to solve each one. We have focused on simplifying the role of placing pieces – there is no moving pieces into place and clicking buttons to rotate and flip. Instead, you use your mouse to draw them into place, while drawing over an already present shape will remove it. It’s a very simple mechanic which anyone can easily understand. The story of the game revolves around the evil but slightly incompetent Astroslugs who strife to leave their home planet and conquer the universe. Their only problem: They have no source of energy to jumpstart their space craft. Now they turn to you to fix this problem and get them on their way to the stars.

Autumn Dynasty

Blocks: The Devilish Delivery Game
Blocks is a physics based racing game that entices both casual and competitive players with it’s unique gameplay. Along the path to the island, the player is confronted with obstacles designed to impede their progress. Burning Thirst
Burning Thirst is an action game with brutal fighting, using contact weapons in a God of War stile. Following a Grindhouse esthetical it is set in a post apocalyptic world. In the game we play as Joe Blades, an ex aircraft pilot who survived the catastrophe. Our main object is to retrieve the last existing whisky bottle, which is in Perdition City, under the custody of Bruce Krauser and his band of mutants. To get it back we’ll have to use all our extraordinary skills to finish with all the enemies who get in our way. There will also be the final battle in the city’s casino. The core mechanics consists in the linking of several attacks with a short and medium range weapon, which will allow us to get rid of several enemies all at once. We also have the option of doing special attacks or of finishing off enemies in an especially cruel way using fatalities.

Captain Earth
In the near future fly with one of Earth’s best pilots in an epic adventure across the Cosmos. This game will run from any command prompt on a WindowsXP machine. The graphic system uses the extended Ascii characters and 16 colors.

Cargo Delivery
Cargo Delivery is an indie physics driven game with player customization, 45 levels (2 play modes: mission mode and challenge mode), leaderboards etc. You have to transport several cargo types handling weight, wind and other external artifacts. The main goal of the game is to acquire a fully working Sailboat for Rufus (the main character). Most of the art was done using watercolor and scanned.

Castle Vox
Castle Vox is a fast world domination game. The game mechanic is a mix of the old-skool boardgames Diplomacy and Axis and Allies, wrapped up in a shiny modern package. Castle Vox features myriad maps, team scenarios, simultaneous-turns, challenging AI, multi-player modes, a map editor, achievements, and more…

CellCraft
CellCraft is a real time strategy/defense game that seeks to blur the line between “edutainment” and pure entertainment titles. The player is put in charge of growing, maintaining, and protecting a cell across a series of increasingly hostile environments in an effort to save a species of sentient, scientific platypuses. The game involves resource management, exploration of a small environment, and preparing real-time automated defenses against viruses (much like a tower defense game) to keep the cell alive and healthy. The rules of the game are based on real principles of biology, and the player will end up learning a fair amount of basic cellular biology by playing through the game. The hope is that the game will entertain gamers online as well as be a useful tool for middle and high school students who would like to learn about, or reinforce lessons on, cellular biology. With luck, it may even inspire a few gamers to get more involved with science in their schools.

Chenzo Cove is a 3D action/adventure/platformer game where players roll their way around the pirate themed world of Chenzo. Search for gold coins and precious gems. Race other Chenzos to be the fastest ball on the high seas. Set a course for fun with Chenzo Ball.

chick chick BOOM
In general, in chick chick BOOM two chick teams compete against each other in an arena. Attack and defense are the core elements of the game. For attacking the player has the choice between several fancy attacks, like jumping sumo chicks or pink elephants. The defense is done by drawing lines directly in the arena. It works intuitive and logical. For example, when a weight falls from the sky, you can draw a horizontal line above your chicks, this way the weight falls on the line and is blocked.

Clones is a finely tuned internet-multiplayer evolution to the classic Lemmings genre, with elements from games like Unreal Tournament such as different game modes, team play, powerups, leaderboards, and a built-in WYSIWYG level editor. Commander
Commander is a tower defense with a twist: the path of the enemies is dynamic. It evolves in time and you can modify it by installing special turrets. You can also control spaceships to help you in your mission to save the humanity (sigh) and blow up planets when you have no other choice. What do you want more? Lasers, missiles, particle effects, nice classical music, retro sound effects, a mysterious boss, cute colorful pixels, and the most important : it’s fun 🙂

Conquest
Conquest is a unique spin on the turn-based strategy genre, offering fast, simultaneous turn-based strategy gameplay instead of multiple-hour long games of research and building. Cosmos X2
A 2D space shooter giving players a unique dual weapon system. Players choose their two favorite weapons and can switch between them at any time during battle. The currently active weapon takes damage when the player is hit. When an enemy is destroyed, the inactive weapon regenerates health. Each weapon also comes with its own unique shield that can be used both offensively and defensively. Players must strategize their weapon usage based on the situation at hand and the health remaining on each weapon.

Decades is part puzzle game, and part trivia game! A cross between Tetris and Wheel of Fortune, the game challenges you to match cubes to help you fill in and solve the trivia puzzles! Each level is a new decade, featuring themed trivia and stunning visuals! Decades features dazzling animations, challenging trivia, and addictive game play that uses the touch and keyboard features of the phone.

depict1 is an ordinary platformer. Just use your arrow keys and spacebar to guide your character to safety. Perhaps we already safe where we are though. Why leave? You should stay here, no need to venture out into the unforgiving abyss. Just stay here. Trust me.

Desktop Dungeons
Desktop Dungeons is a ten-minute “dungeon crawl” adventure that distills the roguelike genre to its most basic components, turning it into a single-screen puzzle adventure comparable to the likes of Oasis and Tower of the Sorcerer. Using absolutely every resource at their disposal, players need to balance dungeon exploration and treasure looting against frequent combat and divine requests. The scarcity of resources promotes innovation and broad playing styles no matter which character you pick. Wizards can club enemies, rogues occasionally have to soak damage and even the most stalwart warrior will need to pick up the odd spell glyph. The level 10 boss at the end of every dungeon run also provides players with enough of a challenge to make them fight tooth and nail for victory. The game features an extensive unlock hierarchy which gives players access to a wide variety of character classes, races and challenge dungeons. Layers of emergent complexity and gameplay tricks afford veterans an edge in the more grueling scenarios and reward thoughtful play. For the truly ambitious, score-based “ranked” runs and an online leaderboard are also available. WARNING: May contain traces of goat.

Din’s Curse
Din’s Curse is a single player and co-op multiplayer action RPG with 141 class combinations, infinite number of dynamically generated towns, real consequences, and a dynamic, evolving world. Din, champion of the gods, has cursed you into a second life of service because you selfishly squandered your first one while causing misfortune to those around you. Save desperate towns from the brink of annihilation. Until you’re redeemed, you’re doomed to wander the earth alone for all eternity. In Din’s Curse, you will explore an extensive underground, slaying dangerous monsters, solving dynamic quests, dodging deadly traps, and in your spare time, plundering loot. Doc Logic
Doc Logic is a 2D survival-platformer, but can best be described as being a retro styled arcade game at its core. It is the first in a planned trilogy. Enemies and traps will try to slow you down, but the only thing that can lead to a “game over” screen is the clock reaching zero. Shields, thermonukes, and weapon/agility upgrades are necessary for survival against waves evolving enemy robots that are under the control of a powerful boss. 5 checkpoints appear for each level, and are visible on the HUD’s radar. Once all 5 checkpoints are collected, you will advance to the next level and 5 more checkpoints appear. With each new level, the enemies become stronger and come in larger waves. Doc Logic contains 8 unique different stages that offer a change in gameplay. There are 15 levels for each stage. As you progress, the stages expand in size, and the checkpoints are spaced further apart.

DogFighter
DogFighter is a fast paced, arcade aerial combat game with arena style gameplay values. Players can compete against up to 15 opponents in 3 multiplayer modes, or go solo in 6 single player game modes, using beefed up biplanes sporting over 20 different offensive and defensive weapons. Excruciating Guitar Voyage
Excruciating Guitar Voyage is a platform-puzzle-adventure. You play as PX, a surprisingly invincible hairy moron, who can set himself on fire and electrocute himself to solve puzzles.
