I hope you can all see what 3D on the PS3 is for
It is purely, purely, to sell Sony’s expensive 3DTVs.
That’s what Sony does, it’s their DNA. They did it with the Compact Disc with the Playstation, DVD with the PS2, HD and just about managed Blu Ray with the PS3.
A tiny number of people will benefit from the 3DTV stuff. There will always be early adopters, and this is no exception, but I certainly don’t think 3DTV will be as popular as fast as Sony seem to want it to be.
The problem here is that they haven’t even finished servicing the technology they sold on the back of their games division before moving on to the next one. I can count the number of 1080p capable PS3 games that I own on one hand. They took a lot of money from their customers in return for HDTVs, but their console barely manages to use them to their full extent. Yet they have the cheek to tell you that you should buy a new 3DTV now, and a pair of their, proprietary, googles to experience the best experience of their gaming experience.
I bet they are terrified of the 3DS.
I say 3D is bollocks, for the time being at least. I think Sony are impatient, and they should wait until they can put out a console that is powerful enough to support 3D and 1080p resolutions without hampering game performance, because the PS3 certainly isn’t.
Vertical integration has been around for quite a while and most of the major electronics manufactures have been pushing the idea that you need everything of the same brand to get the best out of you’re home cinema, desktop setup or games console setup.
Sony mean while has to show to its audience that 3D is worth buying right now as early adopters are the real cash cow, So how else than showing that to achieve 3D after a customer has bought a 3D TV all he or she needs is a PS3 and some first party software? Its a damn sight better than telling customers that the need another new device on top of the TV just to achieve the 3D.
Don’t forget another Sony triumph – Betamax…
we’ve barely got digital tv installed and there’s minimal HD broadcasts so why push the next technology? They know it won’t sell, especially during (or soon after) a global recession.
personally think it’s all to do with cinema income – get ppl spending more on films at the pictures by bringing out 3d films they almost know the majority can’t watch/experience at home. Plus it makes it a lot harder to camcordered so also helps against piracy. 2 birds, 1 stone.
3d in the home is a complete waste of time atm – afaik different makes use different tech and thus glasses from 1 screen don’t necessarily work on another… So, if you knew mates with a 3d screen and fancied a get together chances are their glasses wouldn’t work anyway.
Sony’s arrogance that they’re right and thus demand propriety accessories (memory sticks, etc) will be their downfall (outside of Japan).
as a jokey thought – considering the litigious nature of some (Americans) and their desire to sue left, right and center – how long before a group of partially-sighted ppl claim they’re being discriminated against with all this 3d shite?!?
“how long before a group of partially-sighted ppl claim they’re being discriminated against with all this 3d shite?!?”
Thanks for the idea. Goodbye student loans.
Ars Technica just did an interesting article on the ideological differences between Nintendo and Sony as demonstrated by 3D: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/07/sony-responds-to-nintendos-3d-attacks.ars
In short, Nintendo is doing the 3DS because they can make games with it. 1 bit of hardware, many games using it. Sony is doing 3D because they can make lots of money with it. Many bits of hardware, very few games (because no-one will be able to make a PS3 game that relies on 3D, as penetration will probably top out in the single figure percentages this generation).
To be fair to Sony, there’s a fair few Blu-ray movies sitting on my shelf that make full use of a 1080p TV. Not that I have a 1080p TV (just 1360×768). Or a PS3, having bought a Panasonic standalone player. But hey, they’ve got a few quid out of me for films.
It’s an interesting idea that you believe Sony have gone all 3DTV on the PS3 to sell TVs, but surely the shift to 3D benefits Panasonic and Samsung just as much. Then there’s Sky that have a 3D channel. They don’t sell TVs do they?
I’d agree that 1080p hasn’t fully been explored, but why the rant against Sony because they’re developing something new?
3D isn’t for me either, but I’m not going to have a little tantrum because someone has decided to develop and sell it.
