If the devs aren’t getting any cash at all from these guys then I’d agree that pirating is better because at least we’re not paying just to line somebody’s pockets off someone else’s hard work. I mean, I like a bargain but I want the devs to get paid!
Should these Fast2Play links be on here at all Lewie?
Whilst his response is reasonable, I don’t entirely agree with Ed’s position. As far as I can tell, these keys have been sourced from bundles, and Fast2Play are then reselling them.
It’s true that devs aren’t making any money from these sales, but they have already been paid for these serials when Fast2Play bought them in a bundle.
The developer/publisher is the only party able to generate Steam keys, and I don’t think they can/should have any say in what happens to them once they are sold onto another party.
If a developer isn’t happy with this occurring, my best advice to them would be to not engage with PWYW promotions that result in this.
long time lurker, first time commenter – just bought Dead Space 1 and Mirror’s Edge through Fast2Play and redeemed in Steam without issue.
I have to agree with Lewie here: both these games were part of a recent Humble Bundle where they were PWYW. I didn’t jump at the opportunity (which I subsequently kicked myself for), but gladly forked over the £1.90-odd to get these now guilt-free.
P.S. Keep up the good work Lewie – you’re a gentleman and a scholar.
Hey Lewie, why would you even advertise these sites? They operate on the edge of legitimacy and sometimes even beyond. This particular site might be trustworthy but we cant compare it to Amazon, Steam, GMG or other deals as they get keys from other regions and/or by other means.
This site has grow a lot and I’d even say is somewhat influential. You advertising key sites are doing a disfavour to the gaming industry. People who want to buy keys from key sites know how to find them. Please stick to proper retail/digital stores.
If you don’t want to use these sites, I’d simply recommend not using them.
My job isn’t to support the games industry or help out developers, but to find the best deals for my users.
Would you consider putting a warning by sites that sell bundle keys?
Alot people (well me, atleast) will buy specifically to support the developer, but in this case would have no idea they’re wasting their money.
If it wasn’t for your udpate i’d have never known.
It’s now unlikley I’ll by from fast2play, I’m glad I have the choice, but if another site came along I’d have no idea.
I personally know what I am getting into these sites but that’s because I am more experienced than the average gamer. I had a friend gift me a game, which turned out to be from a key site. One day the game was gone. Steam support told me that the publisher requested the games to be removed. On the other hand I bought games myself from key sites multiple times and had no issues, so I see both sides of the coin.
The issue I’m having with you promoting these sites is like someone promoting buying stolen stuff. It is giving the buyer the option of getting stuff cheaper. I know its a bit of an unfair example and a very extreme but I have a huge respect for you Lewie and savygamer has saved me a lot of money. But if I was just about saving money I could just torrent stuff you know.
I hope you get what I was going for and notice that a lot of people are a bit dubious about these your new found sources. Hope we have a bit of influence in your future post. In any case thanks for your hard work and keep it up.
@leon
Lurking on bargain sites might not be the most effective way to supporting developers. Pay the full price if that’s your motive.
Savygamer is one of the best ways for supporting great games you can’t justify buying for full price.
Perhaps you typically enjoy a certain genre for a very short period of time but love a game’s art style or its primarily cooperative or only 10 minutes long.
Even if you pay 1/2 or 1/4 of full price, if you know you’ll get a limited amount of value and full price was never an option, you still (hopefully) send a sizable chunk the developer’s way.
My post was a pretty big request to make – I don’t usually post in the comments and I’m still not 100% sure whether or not I was being a douche (I was probably being a douche). But I thought, if the main reasons to buy a steam key (rather than pirate) are easy downloads and supporting something you like, alot of people would be doing it because they wanted to support something they like.
Fair enaugh mate.
