Interesting, was thinking about getting into Civ V. Is it worth getting this over the GoTY edition? I don’t understand anything about Civ or what any of the extra GoTY stuff really means in terms of how I’d play.
The added content (excluding the new expansion) doesn’t really add anything a non-Civ fan would notice. Given that this is a fiver, I’d buy this over the GOTY version as there’s plenty of gameplay contained within the vanilla version of the game for a Civ virgin.
I highly recommend grabbing a copy if you’re on the fence, it’s super cheap and will give you plenty of hours of play. People will moan that V isn’t as good a IV but that’s an argument for another time.
Thanks for that. Chimes with what I’ve been reading, even some people who have all the DLC say it isn’t worth it and people would be better purchasing specific DLC individually rather than having it all. Add to that the mods that are available look more interesting anyway.
Expansion sounds good too, seemingly fixing V in the eyes of those that loved IV. But I’ll see how far CivV takes me first.
The thing is that the DLC is rather overpriced – far more expensive than the extra amount you’d pay for the GotY version – so if you’re like me and don’t feel like paying more for a handful of DLC civilizations than you did for the actual game, you may find it difficult to justify the purchase of said DLC later on. That being said, the game is quite good and definitely worth £5. The game is sometimes on sale at Steam (-75%) so if you miss this opportunity, there will be more in the near future.
I’m sure bying all the DLC would work out more expensive, but I think the point someone on a forum was making was no one person really needs/uses all the DLC and buying say 1 or 2 bits that catch your eye will be cheaper. I need to research more to see what it all is. Like I said in the first post, I don’t even understand the game so I can’t place any value on the DLC, I don’t fully know what it is.
Have decided to skip this. I need to play the demo more thoroughly, and past deals on GOTY edition have been very good. I can’t wait, and I’ve other stuff I should be playing first.
sorry for dragging up an old item, however was just browsing to see what I had missed and spotted this, I only have a mac so is there any way I can do this?
sorry wasn’t trying to waste your time, I thought you meant you could activate it on windows and then get it via steam on mac (like the orange box and other cross platform stuff) I didn’t know the code would work straight on the mac steam.
Other cross platform stuff like The Orange Box works this way too. It’s the same serial number to activate the Windows or Mac version, you can activate them on Steam on either platform, and you always get access both versions (if it is a Steamplay game, which Civ5 is).
brilliant, cheers Lewie, appreciate you taking time to answer the questions even if they do seem dim. Not that savy with steam and mac/pc gaming so didn’t know that.

Not sure this is £4.99 on Mac. Looks like £20.99 to me:

Just buy the Windows version. You have to activate it on Steam, and Steam will give you both versions.
Indeed it does – excellent – thanks

I can repeat myself if you like:

It looks like the DLC is 75% off at Gamersgate too.
