Now only if I wasn’t not buying anything else due to the pre-orders I already have lined up…
Thanks for this one!
Work blocks your link, but I couldn’t pass up the deal so I manually went to Play. I don’t think you’ll get monetary recognition for providing the link, but just wanted to say thanks again. Enjoy my subscription!
Not to worry, I’d prefer you guaranteed yourself a good deal rather than worry about the (fairly small cut) I get on an individual transaction anyway.
Thanks for the subscription! XxX
One thing I’ve always wondered is how these systems work. Is there any way you could shed light onto it? A bit of transparency never hurts (unless there’s legal rubbish to consider).
It’s pretty simple really. Third parties called affiliate marketers operate services where retailers go to them and say “Drive sales towards us, and we’ll give you a cut of all the sales”, I then set up a contract with the various affiliate marketers, and they then give me a prefix or suffix to stick before or after links, and they then track the sales, and give me the commission (keeping a share of it themselves).
Some retailers, like Amazon and Play-Asia, don’t use a third party, but operate affiliate marketing themselves, but most do use a third party.
And it’s only sales that they track? Traffic from affiliate links means nothing? Tell them to keep selling things ridiculously cheap and I’ll keep adding to basket. 🙂
Yeah, I don’t get anything for clicks, just transactions.
Oh, it does track any other purchases you make at the same time (which is nice when people on Amazon buy a £10 game and then get a £600 TV at the same time – that’s happened a couple of times!) and for some of them I think they install a 30 day cookie to track any transactions in that time period too.
Edit: Also, this is probably a good time to point out that I don’t make any distinction between deals from places that do or don’t offer commission, nor do I discriminate between places offering different rates of commission. Probably goes without saying, but it’s worth mentioning.
I appreciate the non-descrimination Lewie, as I’m sure all your regulars do.
Is there any benefit to you when they buy a £600 TV at the same time (or something within 30 days) or is it just interesting stats? I’m getting tempted to click on all (non-Hut) links in the off-chance I’ll buy something from there in the nearby future. 🙂
Yeah, I get commission on them too, at the same rate.
I’m sorry but any idea until when the sale lasts? I can’t buy until 2 hours from now, hope the price doesn’t change before..
Not a clue, sorry.
So this arrived today, but they sent me the normal edition rather than the collectors edition. I’d already installed it by the time I noticed, burning the code. I’ll send them an email and see what they say …
My copy just arrived BUT it’s the standard version so I’m attempting to return it for the listed collectors edition I ordered.
🙁 Picked myself up one of these, then persuaded 3 different UK based internet-friends (scotland/england/wales spread) to buy this too (since we were all still meeting online for the occasional DOW2:Chaos Rising game)
But ofc , myself and the 3 others all received normal edition boxed copys of the game, but billed as the collectors edition with even all the internal invoice documentation still stating its the ‘collectors edition’
From my experince in the past with play shipping the WRONG item but the CORRECT invoice = Absolute nightmare to get play.com to refund/replace or even straight up believe you.
Just thought id give a headsup to anyone thinking of ordering this
Just got my copy through the post and it was the standard edition not the collectors. Hopefully just a mistake with my order but thought I better say just in case.
Urgh. What a mess. I shall email them myself, and encourage you all to do the same.
In the same boat – standard version through the door but order history still states collector’s ed (with the collector’s ed image). Guess it’s a clusterfuk for all orders…
I sent them an email, because they shouldn’t get away with false advertising. In fairness, it’s still a good deal. The standard version was £15 during the Steam sale, if memory serves.
I think it was more likely an error, rather than them intentionally misleading anyone. Hopefully they’ll be sorting it out on Monday morning.
WHAT
I’ll be awfully mad if i receive the standard edition, i don’t think it’ll get here until Thursday
Worst of all, Amazon uk has just matched their price and i’m pretty sure they’d never make this mistake http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dawn-War-II-Retribution-Collectors/dp/B004IEA46O
Sorry for several replies but i’m wondering; people that got the Standard edition, when was yours posted? I ordered mine tuesday night and didn’t ship it until friday afternoon.. Here’s hoping they noticed it before that :X
Same here with the Standard version, instead of the CE that was sneaky of PLAY.COM to do that, They are refunding me, as I don’t want to wait another 7 odd days for the “Standard Ed” to turn up again.
Refunding and letting you keep the Standard?
No chance..:( refunding and me sending it back, having to do all the work, and at the end of it all, i am exactly where I started.
It’s been a long time since I ordered anything from play.com (now i remember why) and it will be a long time before I order anything from them again.
Well..apparently they don’t even list the CE anymore. I guess my hope of still receiving the CE this week is gone now. http://www.play.com/Search.html?searchstring=Retribution&searchtype=gameall&searchsource=2&searchfilters=s{Retribution}%2bc{362}%2b
I’ve returned my standard edition and they emailed me when they received it to tell me I’d been credited for the cost of the item as the collectors edition is out of stock.
Same thing happened to me…not impressed play.com
