Here is a list of games currently on Steam that already have a native mac port in existence

Update:
I have posted an updated version of this list which shows which of these games have been made available to the, now released, Mac version of Steam.

Looks like Steam is coming to mac, and likely with mac ports of Valve’s games.

Here is a list of all the games currently available on steam that have already had a native mac release. In addition to these, ones using dosbox or ScummVM should be easy enough to give a mac release.

WOAH thats quite a library there, I think Valve is porting over their back catelogue too.

    • Lewie Procter #

      I think so too.

      • Biggie #

I only see valve porting Source engine games, post HL2. Though I guess they could port HL1 base games as they all use opengl, but that would seem like more work for less reward.

  2. Shadowmancer #

You missed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, (2 isn’t ported for the first time in the series).

    • Lewie Procter #

      Thanks, I’ll add it now.

      • Shadowmancer #

There’s some games on the Mac store too (http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/games?mco=OTY2ODY0Ng), you might want to cross check them with game on steam,

      • Lewie Procter #

Excellent, spotted a few extra ones. I’m amazed that The Sims still isn’t on Steam in any form.

      • Shadowmancer #

Sims 3 is at the US Steam store I think.

      • matt lowery #

It won’t be on Steam, because it’s made by EA, and their EA Store is a rival to Steam.

I -think- that the Steam version of Doom is the dos version and runs with DosBox

    • Cooper #

And, yes, that’s right. I am incapable of reading

    • Lewie Procter #

I think so too, and likely any Mac version would be running via DOSbox too, but there was a native mac port of it back when it originally released too.

id seem to be pretty good at supporting Mac/Linux as well as Windows.

The Grand Theft Auto port isn’t an official one, it’s the PC version being emulated via Cider. That said, it highlights how easy it would be for Valve to stick other games in similar wrappers and get them working in OSX too.

    • Lewie Procter #

Really? I just took it from Wikipedia.

It will be interesting to see if having the option of Steam for mac games encourages developers to make mac versions of their new games, and maybe go back and make older games work on OSX too.

Thinking about it, I wonder if it will involve CrossOver Games in some way? One of their biggest selling points is that it lets you run Steam on a Mac, and they tend to focus their compatibility efforts on Steam games.

There are a few other Steam titles currently available for the Mac from Direct2Drive, including:

Dragon Age: Origins (it’s not on the Mac page but turns up if you search)
    Jade Empire
    FlatOut 2
    The Path
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords

      Cheers!

  6. Our game (Penguins Arena) is also available on Mac.

      Added, thanks.

There was an original Mac version of Wolfenstein 3D back in the day but no idea if it still runs on todays computers.

    • Jeremy Avalon #

Well, it runs on the iPhone… :)

  8. echave #

Torchlight has no native Mac version, it’s only be released for PC. There’s a promise of a Mac release, but it’s already been pushed back and there’s never been a launch date. How many other entries are erroneous?

  9. Jeremy Avalon #

The Resurrection of Evil expansion for Doom 3 was never released for Mac. It’s possible to get the multiplayer working with the files from the PC disc but the expansion proper isn’t cross-compatible.

Many titles on this list are OS 9 ports only. Deus Ex and Unreal right off the bat, as well as the original Doom and Quake titles and their ilk (Heretic/Hexen etc.) — although all of those were source-ported later.

A number of titles based on the Quake III engine (including Jedi Knight, American McGee’s Alice, and others) also got broken under 10.5-10.6. Unless Valve is also announcing a takeover of Aspyr’s patching duties, we won’t see nearly this many titles.

    • Jedi Knight II and especially American McGee’s Alice run just fin here in 10.6.2 using the latest universal binary patches.

      • Jeremy Avalon #

Really. I’ll have to try that. I managed to get Alice running with a config file I pulled of some torrent site, but I never found a working patch for Jedi Knight. I seem to recall that both simply caused my speakers— wait, that’s right, IIRC, this was also a MacBook-specific issue.

        Never mind then.

What about Peegle Extreme?, its Steam Exclusive at the moment but if the other Peegles work this might.

    • Lewie Procter #

Yeah, I wouldn’t be too surprised if they ended up making a mac version of it, but it is currently only on Windows.

  11. Sid Meier’s Pirates is on Steam and has a Mac port:
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/3920/
    http://www.feralinteractive.com/game/pirates

It will be my first purchase when OS X steam is released.

    • Lewie Procter #

      Thanks, added now.

Actually, Deus Ex for Mac was never ported to the Intel architecture, which means that it wont run on new Intel Macs.

  13. Damien #

Most those games are not *native* but cider ports…. it’s just custom emulation… nothing to do with native developed games. Epic Games (Unreal Tournament), Id Software (Quake), and Blizzard (Starcraft, Wow, Diablo) are about the only companies really developing natively on the Mac.

Electronic Arts games are all Cider ports… nothing native there…. and really nothing very performant and/or stable.

    • BoomBox-Creations #

You are right there, it is really only a container.

But first look, you dont really notice the difference. Which isnt a bad thing. It pretty much runs natively. And if you know what your doing, you can rip out the game thats in the container and put in your own. I did this for Psychonauts.

Using cider for their games, it makes it easier for the companies to release a mac version of the game without spending countless hours-even days recoding it to another platform. A cider port, a well done one at that, can take no more than an hour. Psychonauts took about 5 minutes (other than finding an icon :P ) because everything that it needs to run is in its own game file. Whereas if you want to port something like, for instance Red Alert 3, it uses alot of windows components, so it might take a few hours.

(Red Alert 3 has an official cider port, but i still did it myself, couldnt be bothered re buying the game..)

      Thats it for me.

Both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 were available for Mac (not sure which versions) back in the day. :)

  15. Our game Depths of Peril also has a native Mac version.

  16. drohnwerks #

Doom3 RoE has a mac port?

  17. RootBeerKing #

I’m pretty sure there is a Mac version of Gish, and that isn’t on this list.
